I’d like to talk about the movie, Passing. This movie was released on Netflix, and the story originally came from a novel. The whole context indicates the discrimination between black and white people in the very past of the United States via a story of a black woman who wants to become white. The woman acts like a white and puts make up on her face like the whites do. Also, she wears clothes like the top class of white society. The story ends sadly, which I think conveys the tragic history regarding discrimination.

Back then, the mainstream among races in the US was the whites, so the blacks couldn’t help but comply with the discrimination society to them. The movie shows the deepest discrimination unseen directly via the life of a black woman who admires the mainstream that contains racism. The way of delivering the message in the movie was impressive to me, and I became aware of the historical discrimination among races in the US.

As all the scenes are in a black-and-white film, I find it memorable that I couldn’t distinguish the character’s skin color visually while watching the movie. This means that the audience does not have any prejudice in terms of racism before the characters communicate in the movie, but concentrates on the dialogue and the interaction between the characters accumulating the social discrimination layer.

I would like to discuss the film, "Passing." This movie was released on Netflix and is based on a novel. The storyline revolves around the discrimination between black and white people in the historical United States, focusing on a black woman who desires to pass as white. She alters her appearance to look white, dresses in the attire of the upper-class white society, and mimics their behavior. The movie concludes tragically, highlighting the historical tragedy of discrimination.

During that era, white people were dominant in the US, leading to black individuals feeling compelled to conform to the discriminatory societal norms. Through the life of a black woman who aspires to fit into the mainstream society characterized by racism, the film portrays the profound and indirect discrimination she faces. The film effectively conveys a message about historical racial discrimination in the US.

An aspect of the movie that stood out to me was its black-and-white filming, which made it challenging to visually determine the characters' skin color. This decision prompts the audience to focus on the characters' interactions and dialogues rather than making prejudiced assumptions based on race, highlighting the layers of social discrimination.
