Lately, one of my colleagues was out of the office because of her medical checkup. I had to cover her duties during her absence. She handed over the communication with our clients. It wasn’t a busy day like when we deal with loads in a rush, so I actually got only an email from them.
To take over tasks on behalf of someone, you should ask about any ambiguous point regarding the job before their absence. If you have followed up well on it normally while carrying out your own job, covering someone else's job would not be a big deal. However, if you didn’t follow up on it, make sure of what you have been handed over before they are off from the office.
When I had to maneuver an urgent job, the communication proved to be challenging from time to time. Especially, if there is a need todecide on something to proceed with a task I would have to push the clients to respond to my requests at the earliest convenience.

Recently, one of my colleagues has been on medical leave. Consequently, I had to assume her responsibilities during her absence, including handling communication with our clients. It was not a hectic day, compared to our usual quick-paced workload; I mainly dealt with client correspondence via email.
In order to effectively take on someone else's tasks, it is advisable to clarify any uncertainties about the job before their absence. This preparation ensures a smooth transition. If you have been consistently keeping up with your regular duties, assuming additional responsibilities should not be overly challenging. However, if you have not been actively involved in the tasks previously, it is essential to fully understand what you are taking over before the colleague is absent.
Navigating urgent tasks proved to be a demanding experience, particularly in managing client communications. When faced with critical decision-making situations, I often had to prompt clients to respond promptly and assist me in advancing the tasks efficiently.

Hey, so my work buddy has been away for her medical checkup recently, so I had to do her tasks. She left me in charge of talking to our clients. It wasn't crazy busy, just got one email from them.
If you're going to cover for someone, it's good to ask questions about the job beforehand. If you stay on top of things when you're doing your own work, taking over for someone else isn't too hard. But if you haven't been keeping track, make sure you know what you're supposed to do before they leave.
Dealing with urgent tasks was a bit tough when I had to handle them. Communication was tricky, especially when I needed decisions to move forward. I had to bug the clients to reply to me quickly.
